A Second Life for Neoprene
Our Upcycling Project at Vienna Design Week
At FAIRtigung Textil of KÜMMEREI, we are committed to using resources responsibly and combining design with social responsibility. One particularly exciting project is “A Second Life for Neoprene” which we carried out together with designer Jasmin Bermadinger (blass & orange).
From retired wetsuits that had lost their original function, we created a shoulder bag – a product that combines sustainability, craftsmanship, and social participation. Neoprene is a material that is difficult to recycle, and this is exactly where we were able to contribute our expertise in textile processing and upcycling. Jasmin Bermadinger brought her design expertise to the team, and together we developed the prototype.
With the finished prototype, we demonstrate how design can use resources consciously and create social value: the hard-to-recycle material is given a second life, people in a social enterprise gain meaningful work, and creativity becomes a tool for ecological and social change.

The prototype is now complete – and we are delighted that our project will be presented at Vienna Design Week. Visitors will have the chance to see how retired materials can be transformed through careful craftsmanship and innovative design into something completely new.
For us, “A Second Life for Neoprene” is more than just a product: it is proof that circular economy, social engagement, and quality design can work hand in hand – and it motivates us to continue down this path.
